How to Update Your Automation Rules for Shipments to the USA

This article explains how to update your store automation rules so shipments to the USA include the 10-digit HTS code now required by U.S. Customs.

Introduction

From July 24, 2026, U.S. Customs requires a 10-digit HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) code for every product shipped to the United States. The 6- and 8-digit HS codes used previously are no longer accepted for shipments to the US.

To meet this requirement, Swotzy now validates HTS codes for all shipments to the USA. You can only create a shipping label if every product in the shipment has a valid 10-digit HTS code.

If your store automation rules set an HS code with fewer than 10 digits, shipments to the USA will fail validation. Update these rules to avoid disruption.

Result

After completing these steps, your Set HS code rules will apply a valid 10-digit HTS code to orders shipped to the USA, so labels for those shipments pass validation.

Before You Start

Make sure that:

  • You have a connected store in Integrations > Stores
  • You know the correct 10-digit HTS code for each product you ship to the USA

You can look up the correct code in the official U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule database: https://hts.usitc.gov/

If you currently use a 6- or 8-digit HS code, it can help you find the matching 10-digit HTS code. Always select the code that accurately matches your product.

This requirement applies to all shipments to the USA, regardless of carrier — including postal operators such as Latvijas Pasts and Omniva, as well as express couriers such as FedEx, UPS, and DHL.

Step 1 — Open your store's automation rules

  1. In the left-hand menu, click Integrations
  2. Select Stores
  3. Click Manage under the store you want to update
  4. Find the Rules panel on the right side of the screen

Step 2 — Find your Set HS code rules

Under Order Import, look for any rule using the Set HS code action.

Check every store you ship from. Update each Set HS code rule that applies to shipments to the USA — this includes rules that apply to all orders, not only rules already limited to the USA.

Step 3 — Update the HTS code

  1. Click the Set HS code rule you want to edit
  2. If the current code is not a 10-digit HTS code, replace it with the correct 10-digit code for your product

Step 4 — Add a US condition to general rules

If the rule applies to all shipments rather than only shipments to the USA, add a condition so the correct code is used for US orders.

  1. Click + Add Condition
  2. Select Recipient country in the first dropdown
  3. Select is in the second dropdown
  4. Select United States of America in the third dropdown

Add any other conditions that fit your use case.

Step 5 — Save your changes

Click Save Changes in the bottom right of the screen.

Repeat these steps for every Set HS code rule that applies to shipments to the USA, across all your connected stores.
